第 50 课: Why is this bell so special? 这座钟为何这么特别?

Jin: Where did all the syllables go? 那些音节跑到哪里去了?

Rick: That's the beauty of Philly's slang-the easier it is to pronounce, the better! 那就是费城俚语的美妙之处——愈容易发音愈好!

Jin: That's interesting. 真有意思。

Rick: Or you can say, “that's innerestin’.” 或是说 ‘曾有意素’也行。

Jin: That's different. You guys like to drop the “t” a lot, right? 是有些不同。你们很喜欢把t省略掉,对吧?

Rick: Right. It helps the words to flow right off your tongue. 没错。这样可以让字顺口溜出嘴。

Jin: I didn't realize big American cities have their own specialized slang! 我之前都不知道美国大城有自己特殊的俚语!

Rick: Here we are! The Liberty Bell-our city's most famous landmark. 我们到了!独立钟是我们这个城市最有名的地标。

Jin: Why is this bell so special? 这座钟为何这么特别?

Rick: Well, it was rung on July 8, 1776, to signify America's independence. 嗯,它在一七七六年七月八日响起,表示美国独立了。

Jin: Huh. That must have been a big deal at the time. 嗯。在那时候一定是一件大事。

Rick: Very big! It used to be rung every July 4th-America's birthday-in memory. 非常大的大事!它过去在每年七月四日美国国庆时都会响起,做为纪念。

Jin: What's the story behind the big crack in the bell? 钟上面那个大裂缝是怎么回事?

Rick: It was first cracked by a bell clapper when tested in 1835. But it cracked irreparably when rung for Washington's birthday in 1846. 它第一次被钟舌敲裂是在一八三五年测试时。但在一八四六年华盛顿诞辰被敲响时,它裂到无法修补了。
