Britain was the first industrial country. The dominant economic philosophies in nineteenth century Britain were laissez-faire (i.e. non-involvement of the government in business) and free trade. 英 国 是 第 一 个 工 业 国。 十 九 世 纪 英 国 的 经 济 哲 学 是 不 干 涉 主 义 （即 政 府 不 卷 入 经 济 活 动） 和 自 由 贸 易。

Whilst the original members of the EC saw as their aim an increasingly united Europe, Britain initially established EFTA(that is European Free Trade Association) in 1950, along with other non-EC European countries. 当 欧 共 体 最 初 的 会 员 国 意 欲 使 欧 洲 日 趋 统 一 时， 英 国 却 牵 头 和 其 他 非 欧 共 体 国 一 起 成 立 EFTA （欧 洲 自 由 贸 易 协 会）。
