The growth of mass circulation newspapers in Britain was a direct result of the process of industrialisation during the 18th and 19th centuries.

As large urban populations developed, and became more literate and numerate, so the taste for reading material grew.

During the 18th century, newspaper readership had been largely confined to the upper classes and wealthier sections of the middle class.

In the early years the newspaper industry was subject to a great deal of governmental control.

However, in the years following the French Revolution(1789), a radical press developed in Britain, concerned to propagate ideas of social reform and social justice.

By 1817 the most successful of these, the Political Register, had a circulation of around 40,000.

The radical papers were developing at the same time as the Trade Unions, and were often used as their mouthpieces and as a means of political education.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the first of the modern, mass circulation, popular daily newspaper, the Daily Mail began circulation.

This was the beginning of a new type of journalism, with an emphasis on entertainment as well as news reporting.

The first half of the 20th century saw the newspaper industry reach its peak influence in terms of circulation and readership. 20

Between 1918 and 1947 circulation of the national dailies increased by 500%.

However with this rise in circulation there was a significant decline in the number of papers published and a trend towards the concentration of press ownership.

Since the 1950s the circulation of most types of newspapers declined steadily, partly as a result of developments in television broadcasting which provided an alternative source of information and entertainment.
