The word, however, remained in the language. Today, Americans still say, "It panned out well," when something they have done pleases them. 然 而， 英 语 里 仍 然 保 留 了 这 个 词 汇。 今 天， 当 美 国 人 做 了 一 件 自 己 感 到 满 意 的 事 情 时， 他 们 还 是 说： “淘 出 了 好 结 果”。

A business, a discovery, a simple event pans out well if successful; if not, then it does not pan out. 一 宗 生 意、 一 个 发 现、 一 件 简 单 的 事， 只 要 成 了 功， 就 算 “淘 出 好 结 果”， 反 之 就 是 淘 不 出 结 果。

In recent years, "pan" has taken on another meaning. 近 年 来， “淘” 有 了 另 外 的 一 层 意 思。

Today, it also means to criticize. How it got this meaning is hard to discover. 今 天， 它 还 指 批 评。 搞 不 清 楚 它 是 怎 么 获 得 这 个 意 思 的。

But critics are always "panning" some writer, artist or singer. That is part of their job. 批 评 家 总 是 在 “淘” （“批 评”， “克”） 某 个 作 家、 画 家 或 歌 唱 家。 他 们 干 的 就 是 这 一 行 嘛。

Sometimes, critics may pan a movie or play so severely that no one will go to see it. 批 评 家 们 有 时 狠 狠 地 “淘” 一 部 电 影 或 一 剧 戏， 结 果 谁 也 不 去 看 了。

This can also happen to a book, if critics pan it strongly enough. 如 果 批 评 家 对 一 本 书 “淘” 得 太 厉 害， 这 本 书 也 会 没 有 销 路。
