As soon as the soldier was alone, he kindled his pipe with the blue light, and his little black friend stood beside him. 当 士 兵 一 个 人 的 时 候 ， 他 用 蓝 灯 点 着 烟 斗 ， 那 位 小 朋 友 又 站 在 他 的 身 边 了。

"Don't be afraid," he said, "go with them calmly wheresoever they take you, but don't forget the blue light."“别 怕，” 小 人 儿 说 道 ， “ 无 论 他 们 把 你 带 到 哪 儿， 沉 住 气，跟 他 们 去 就 是 了，不 过 别 忘 了 带 上 蓝 灯。”

The next day the soldier was tried by the judges, and though he had done nothing wrong, he was condemned to death. 第 二 天 士 兵 受 到 法 官 审 问 ， 他 没 有 犯 法 ， 却 被 判 处 死 刑 。

When he was brought to the gallows he besought the King to grant him a last favor. 他 被 带 到 绞 刑 架 去 的 时 候 ， 请 求 国 王 给 他 最 后 一 个 恩 典 。

"What sort of favor?" asked the King. “ 什 么 恩 典？” 国 王 问。

"That I may smoke a pipe on the way."“让 我 在 路 上 抽 一 袋 烟。”

"You may smoke three pipe: but remember they won't save your life." retorted the King. “你 可 以 抽 三 袋 烟， 可 别 忘 了，那 也 救 不 了 你 的 命。”国 王 说 。

The soldier drew out his pipe, lit it with the blue light, and before a ring of smoke had floated on the air, the little man, with a cudgel in his hand, stood before him saying, "What orders, my master?"士 兵 取 出 烟 斗 ， 用 蓝 灯 点 了 烟 。 一 圈 烟 飘 到 空 中 时 ， 小 人 儿 手 里 拿 着 一 根 棍 子 站 在 他 面 前 说： “有 什 么 吩 咐， 我 的 主 人？”

"Strike the false judges to the ground. and do not spare the monarch who has treated me so shamefully." was the command. “把 那 些 不 老 实 的 法 官 打 倒 在 地 ， 也 别 放 过 国 王 ， 他 那 么 对 待 我 ， 真 可 耻。” 这 就 是 他 的 命 令。

The small man lashed about with fury. and felled everyone round him to the earth. 那 个 小 人 儿 愤 怒 地 抡 棍 便 打 ， 把 他 周 围 的 人 统 统 打 倒 在 地。
