第 38 课: The Little Man 小 矮 人-2

When the King came and saw this, he was greatly surprised and pleased; but his heart grew still more greedy, and he shut up the poor miller's daughter in another room with a fresh task.

She knew not what to do, and sat down once more to weep.

But the little man presently opened the door, and asked, "What will you give me to do your task?"

"This diamond ring," replied she. So her little friend took the ring, and worked away at the wheel till by morning all was finished again.

The King was greatly delighted to see all this glittering treasure; but still he was not satisfied, and took the miller's daughter into a yet larger room, and said, "If all this is spun tonight you shall be my Queen."

As soon as she was alone the dwarf came in, and asked: "What will you give me to spin the gold for you this third time?"

"I have nothing left to give," said she.

"Then promise me," said the little man, "your first child when you are Queen."

"That may never be," thought the miller's daughter; and as she knew no other way to get her task done, she promised what he asked, and he spun once more the whole heap of gold.

The King came in the morning, and finding all he wanted, married her.

At the birth of her first little child the Queen rejoice greatly, quite forgetting the little man and her promise.
