But Hansel had not been really looking at the kitten; he was scattering behind him the pebbles out of his pocket.其 实 汉 塞 尔 并 不 是 真 的 在 看 小 猫 ， 他 在 往 身 后 撒 口 袋 里 的 小 石 子。

When they came to the middle of the wood the father said, "Now, children, pick up sticks, and we will make a fire."他 们 走 到 森 林 中 间，父 亲 说： “喂，孩 子 们， 捡 树 枝 吧， 我 们 来 生 火 。”

Hansel and Gretel built up quite a pile of twigs, and when the fire was lighted and the flames were rising high, the woman said, "You can lie down by the fire and rest yourselves while we go further to cut wood. They knocked at the door, and when the woman opened it and saw Hansel and Gretel she said, "Why did you sleep so long in the wood? We began to think you were not coming back at all."他 们 敲 敲 门，那 个 女 人 把 门 打 开， 看 到 汉 塞 尔 和 格 雷 特 尔 就 说 ： “ 你 们 怎 么 在 森 林 里 睡 了 那 么 久？我 们 以 为 你 们 不 回 来 了 呢。”

Not long afterwards there was again distress everywhere,and the children heard their mother saying to their father in the night, "There is hardly anything left to eat, only half a loaf of bread, and when that is gone what are we to do? 此 后 不 久， 各 处 又 闹 饥 荒。 一 天 夜 里， 两 个 孩 子 听 到 继 母 对 父 亲 说 ： “简 直 没 什 么 东 西 可 吃 了，只 剩 下 半 块 面 包，吃 完 了，我 们 该 怎 么 办 呢？

The children must be done away with. We will take them deeper into the wood this time, so that they will not be able to find their way out. It's the only thing to be done to save us." 一 定 得 把 孩 子 们 扔 掉 。 这 一 回， 我 们 要 把 他 们 俩 领 到 森 林 里 更 远 的 地 方 去， 他 们 就 找 不 到 出 来 的 路 了。只 有 这 样， 咱 们 才 能 活 命。”
